Top Digital Skills Your Team Needs in 2027

The tools your firm runs on change every year. The skills your team needs to use them well change more slowly, but they do change. If you run an agency, consultancy or accounting firm, these are the eight digital skills worth building in 2027, and what each one looks like in day-to-day client work.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 puts AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, and technological literacy at the top of the fastest-growing skills, with creative thinking, resilience and lifelong learning close behind. Here is what that means for a professional services team.

1. Working with AI, safely and on purpose

Most teams already use AI to draft emails or summarise calls. The skill for 2027 is using it on purpose: knowing which tasks to hand to an assistant, writing clear instructions, checking the output, and keeping client data out of tools that shouldn’t see it.

  • Agree which AI tools are approved and what client data may go into them
  • Keep a shared library of prompts that work for your recurring tasks
  • Always have a person review anything that goes to a client

2. Data literacy

Owners want to know which clients are profitable, which projects run late and where the team’s hours go. Someone on the team needs to read a dashboard, spot what looks wrong and ask the right follow-up question. That doesn’t need a data analyst, just people who are comfortable with numbers they see every week.

3. Cybersecurity habits

Phishing, shared passwords and old accounts left open after someone leaves are still how most small firms get into trouble. The skills here are everyday habits: a password manager, two-factor sign-in everywhere, checking unexpected payment requests, and an offboarding checklist that actually gets used.

4. Running work in one system

A firm where every client, project and deadline lives in one place can grow without the owner holding it together. Team members need to keep that system current: update a status, log a decision, attach the file to the record instead of an email thread. It sounds small. It is the difference between a system that works and one that is abandoned after three months.

5. Automation thinking

Not everyone needs to build automations. Everyone should notice when they do the same thing for the tenth time and say so. Teams that flag repetitive work early (copying data between tools, sending the same reminder, chasing the same approval) are the ones that get it automated.

6. Clear written communication

Remote and hybrid teams, clients across time zones and AI tools that work from written instructions all reward people who write clearly. Short updates, decisions written down, and handover notes that someone else can follow without a call.

7. Adaptability

Your tools will update, your clients’ expectations will shift and new platforms will appear. Teams that cope well treat a change as something to learn, not something to work around. Short, regular training beats one big session a year.

8. Lifelong learning, built into the week

Learning only happens if it has a place in the calendar. Many firms set aside a fixed hour a week or a monthly session where someone shows the team one better way of doing a common task.

Where to start

Pick the two skills that would save your firm the most time this quarter. For most professional services firms, that is running work in one system and working with AI safely. Write down what “good” looks like, show the team, and check in a month later.

If your team keeps falling back to spreadsheets and email, the problem is usually the setup, not the people. Book a Free Setup Review and we’ll show you what we’d fix first.
